Moving Out

It is estimated that the average person lives in eleven different places during their lifetime. This can include extraordinary moves, such as picking up in Ohio and setting down in London, or not so extreme ones, such as moving your inflatable furniture from college apartment 1A to college apartment 3B. Whether the move is big, small, or somewhere in between, one thing’s for sure: moving can be a hassle. But, with a few simple tips, it just might be a little less of a pain in the box.

Throw Away What you No Longer Need: In one way or another, most of us are pack rats. We have our favorite high school sweater hanging in our closet, we keep a stack of books we’ll never read in our basement, the book report we wrote in 5th grade sits on the top shelf of our hall closet. When it comes down to it, it’s just hard to say goodbye. Still, hauling extraneous stuff from place to place gets old quick. Instead of packing, transporting, and unpacking things you won’t miss – like an old TV with only three channels – put them somewhere they will make you happy: the trash can.

Donate to Charity: There is little sense in throwing things away that could be of use to someone else. You might be tired of your dresser, but it’s still in great shape. Instead of putting it in the trash or taking it with you, give it to charity. Not only does this allow you to help others, but it also allows you to help yourself: donating to charity decreases your load, is tax-deductible and cleans out your place. Many charitable organizations will also come to you. If you have a heavy couch that you want to give away, then give them a call.

Buy New Furniture: A new home is a perfect time for new furniture: a new couch, a bigger bed, a sturdier bookcase. Now, this doesn’t mean that frequent movers should take a trip to the store every time they move, but for those with furniture that is outdated, old, or completely worn and tattered, new furniture beckons. By ordering new, you don’t have to take your old furniture with you. The new furniture, delivered to your new place by the furniture store, will also be moved without you even lifting a finger or a really heavy desk.

When Overwhelmed, Get Help: Anyone who’s ever hired a moving company will probably attest that it was one of their better decisions. Sure it cost money, but it might just be worth it. If you have an enormous amount of stuff, particularly stuff that is heavy, consider asking for help. This removes a great deal of stress from the move, allowing you to focus on other things, like what color to paint your new bathroom.

Pack More Efficiently: Packing, smacking. No one likes to pack. It’s mundane, it’s annoying, and it takes way too long. For this reason, many people simply throw things in boxes, putting plates and dishes in with tennis shoes. This way may take less time, but packing improperly can result in two things: items breaking and arduous unpacking. By simply putting some care into packing, using bubble wrap and putting things in the same box that belong in the same box, your unpacking will be much easier and, more importantly, finished sooner.
